An Update for all “The Pretender” Fans from Series Co-creator

FROM SLICE OF SCIFI:
Back in Sept. 2007 Slice of SciFi’s Linda Craddock did an interview with “Tin Man” creators Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle. During their conversation with Linda they let it slip that the possibility of seeing their other popular series, “The Pretender,” could be resurfacing in a new media format. Since then Pretender fans have been chomping on the bit waiting for more a fitting conclusion to Jared’s (Michael T. Weiss) adventures. It’s been 6 months and as such Craig felt it was time to update everyone by dropping these comments to Slice of SciFi.

“Steve and I are touched by your loyalty and love for ‘The Pretender.’ Please know that often times things grind slowly in Hollywood and such is the case for our desire to get you all final answers for ‘The Pretender’ and to give this series that is so dear to us a fitting and rewarding conclusion. When Steve and I talk about a final episode/movie, our intent is genuine — it just takes time, undoubtedly longer than any of us hope for. Just know we are working to make this a reality and that we so appreciate all of your kind words and patience.” CV

The Pretender to return in new digital format?

  • Post published:December 3, 2007
  • Post category:Streaming

From 1996-2000, NBC had a modest hit on their hand with The Pretender, a show in which main character Jarod used his abilities to assume other people’s identities to help those in need. Kind of a Quantum Leap with identity theft instead of bodysnatching. Creators Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, also of Tin Man, reportedly told SCI FI Wire they’d like to bring back the show in the digital medium. The relaunch, or continuation, could even feature original star Michael T. Weiss in the title role again.

They’ve reportedly brunched Weiss and begun laying the groundwork for the project, so it seems it’s a done deal, just what exactly it means and when and where we’ll be able to see it remains unclear.

I wasn’t able to find anything more about it on the web in the myriad press junkets the duo have been doing for Tin Man, but maybe it’s already begun. Maybe one or both of them have already been replaced by Jarod, or maybe he’s replaced a certain sub sandwich spokesman and that’s the new digital platform. He’ll infiltrate commercials and we’ll watch him between other shows; I bet the advertisers would be on board for that one.

STARTING UNDER (FOX, New!)

FOX has given a blind seven-episode series commitment to a new multi-camera comedy from comedian Bernie Mac (“The Bernie Mac Show”) and “The Drew Carey Show” creator Bruce Helford. The project, which is set up at Helford’s Warner Bros. Television-based Mohawk banner, centers on a larger-than-life and opinionated man (Mac), who, after a divorce, finds himself living with and working for his introverted twentysomething son. Sitcom veteran Andy Ackerman is already on board to direct the half-hour, production of which is obviously contingent on the end of the WGA strike. Helford and Deborah Oppenheimer, who inked a new two-year overall deal with the studio back in June, will then executive produce alongside Ackerman with Mac and his manager Steven Greener both receiving producer credits.

Interview with Creators

Recently dear ol’ Steve and Craig (creators of the Pretender, for those drawing a blank) had an interview with “Slice Of SciFi.com” regarding a new project they’ve completed, a mini-series called “Tin Man”.

In the interview they were asked about The Pretender, this is what they said…(Pay very close attention to the end of Craig’s (“CVS”) looong bit and the stuff after that.)

Oh, and for those who want to read the whole interview go here: http://www.sliceofs cifi.com/ 2007/09/07/ sosf-interview- with-the- tin-man-creators -steven-long- mitchell- and-craig- van-sickle/

SoSF: As a team, you have been credited with a number of television series including NBC’s highly rated The Pretender as executive producers during its five year run. What inspired that particular project or concept?

SLM: That was a labor of love and a script that was originally an expect pilot, which rarely happens in television where you develop outside the studio or network system. What really inspired it was the idea of a character could be a hero as everyone in life is searching for their identity and how we fit in, we wanted a hero who would be searching for his identity but who also could have any identity he wanted, but didn’t know who he was. We wanted a hero that could come into your life and learn things from you by helping you and in his own way be helping himself. There’s a movie that Tony Curtis did called The Great Impostor, which is based on a book by a guy named Ferdinand Demara, which was a great inspiration to us but then we also had a system the C.I.A. had in the early ’50’s that we built upon as well.

CSV: It was called the Genius Project. They would take genius kids and basically bring them into the C.I.A. In the morning they would teach them the regular math, reading, all that stuff and in the afternoon they would have them play games like thermo-nuclear war. They would literally brain pick ideas out of these genius kids that later on actually did become C.I.A. hardware, operations tactics and what not. So we thought that would be interesting to have a genius who could do a lot of different things and knew about everything there was to know because that’s the environment he was raised in and just the idea of the fantasy of a lead TV character that could become anybody he wanted to be. We just felt it would be an interesting series franchise and had a great time doing it. Our fans still clabber for the answers because we never closed The Pretender out. We will just say to them please be patient, it’s going to happen, hopefully soon.

SLM: And it will happen in relationship to Strange Highway.

SoSF: Thank you gentlemen. Another Slice of SciFi scoop, oh, that will be great!

SLM: We will continue the story line of this digitally on the web.

SoSF: I loved that series.

USA NETWORK IGNITES NEW ORIGINAL SERIES ‘BURN NOTICE’ WITH FIRST EVER COMMERCIAL-FREE AIRING PRESENTED BY DIRECTV

    • Post published:June 26, 2007
    • Post category:from HQ

DIRECTV’s Best Picture to Glow as Exclusive Presenting Sponsor of June 28 Premiere

NEW YORK, June 25 — In a first for USA Network, the premiere of the much anticipated new original series, BURN NOTICE, will air commercial- free in its entirety on June 28 at 10pm/9c, it was announced today by Scott Collins, vice president, ad sales, NBC Universal. DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television provider, has been named the exclusive presenting sponsor of the broadcast, which includes a massive fully integrated media and marketing partnership.

The commercial-free premiere sponsorship package with DIRECTV includes all marketing efforts from on-air and online to paid media and promotions.

“As the first series from USA Network to ever air commercial-free, we thought audiences would appreciate the opportunity to learn all about our lead character Michael Westen from beginning to end without interruption,” said Collins. “And we’re thrilled that DIRECTV embraced the show’s unique premise to become our inaugural partner for the BURN NOTICE premiere.”

“This is a terrific way to help reinforce our HD superiority message in anticipation of offering up to 100 HD channels by the end of the year,” said Jon Gieselman, senior vice president of advertising for DIRECTV. “We are always looking for break-through ways to communicate why DIRECTV has a unique advantage over our competitors.”

    The sponsorship also includes:

    ON-AIR PROMOTION

As the commercial-free presenting sponsor, DIRECTV’s message and brand were integrated into all on-air promotional spots, driving viewers to the premiere episode. USA also included DIRECTV in the introduction as well as the customized live-action closing “Thank You” message. USA Network took its creative cues from DIRECTV’s current “4th Wall” television campaign where actors recreate a scene from one of their most iconic film or TV shows and then break the “4th Wall” to talk about DIRECTV (seen in recent DIRECTV on-air spots featuring Charlie Sheen from MAJOR LEAGUE and Pamela Anderson in BAY WATCH).

Lead actor Jeffrey Donovan taped an in-character “thanks for watching” 30- second bumper that will air following the premiere. In the spot, his character Michael Westen, a blacklisted spy, is seen disabling a bugging device in his apartment. When he finishes rendering it inoperable, he turns to the camera and says “Thank you for watching this unique commercial-free presentation of BURN NOTICE presented by DIRECTV.” He then throws the device into a sizzling frying pan. Additionally the viewer will be reminded of DIRECTV’s sponsorship via brand snipes during the telecast.

    BRAND INTEGRATION

DIRECTV will be integrated verbally and visually into two episodes during the summer season.

    OFF-AIR

DIRECTV will be included as part of the BURN NOTICE launch campaign including national out-of-home, print, newspaper, radio and digital media.

    ONLINE

DIRECTV is one of the presenting sponsors of the official BURN NOTICE microsite. Their sponsorship includes pre-roll and display advertising as well as ownership of the specially created Burn Notice Spy Guide which includes a DIRECTV DVR interface and showcases Michael Westen giving users “CIA 101” type tutorials on everyday life situations.

    MOBILE

DIRECTV will be the presenting sponsor of the Burn Notice WAP Site and the weekly SMS Scavenger Hunt.

    About Burn Notice

Series also stars Gabrielle Anwar (“The Tudors,” “Scent of A Woman”) as Fiona, a beautiful ex-IRA operative who happens to be Westen’s ex-girlfriend. Trio Journeys to ‘Oz’ Remake

‘Tin Man’ found, along with Wicked Witch and lion equivalent

Neal McDonough has signed on to become a friend of Dorothy.

The former “Boomtown” actor, Raoul Trujillo and Kathleen Robertson are the latest names to join the Sci Fi Channel miniseries “Tin Man,” based on L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. They join the already cast Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming and Richard Dreyfuss.

In the reimagining of the classic tale, the young woman DG (Deschanel) is snatched up and thrust into the O.Z., where she joins forces with the half-brained man Glitch (Cumming), the wolverine-like Raw (Trujillo) who seeks courage and the emotionally scarred, heroic Cain (McDonough), who was once part of the police force known as Tin Men. They journey along the Old Road to seek the help of the Mystic Man (Dreyfuss), who holds the key to revealing her destiny, which is strangely tied to the wicked Azkeadellia (Robertson). During the final showdown, DG’s life and the future of O.Z. itself hang in the balance.

Production on this psychedelic and twisted update will begin this month in Vancouver. Sci Fi is shooting for a December premiere.

McDonough is best known for “Medical Investigation” and “Band of Brothers” on TV and “Flags of Our Fathers” and “The Hitcher” on the big screen. Robertson stars in and executive produces the IFC series “The Business.” Her other credits include “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Medium” and “Hollywoodland.” Trujillo has appeared in “Apocalypto,” “The New World” and on the TNT miniseries “Into the West.”

Tony Winner Cast In ‘Tin Man’ Miniseries from RHI Entertainment Production Slated to Begin in March

PASADENA, Calif. January 12, 2007 SCI FI Channel has cast Tony winner Alan Cumming (Cabaret, Anniversary Party, X-Men 2) in its upcoming six-hour miniseries Tin Man (working title) from RHI Entertainment. The wildly re-imagined sci-fi fantasy take on Frank Baum’s classic book, The Wizard of Oz is slated to begin production in Vancouver this spring for a December premiere.

Cumming will take on the role of “Glitch,” one of a motley assortment of colorful characters trapped in the Outer Zone (the O.Z.).

A sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always outrageous take on the book, SCI FI’s Tin Man is the epic tale of DG, a young woman plucked from her humdrum life and thrust into The Outer Zone (the O.Z.) a fantastical realm rife with wonder, but oppressed by dark magic. In the adventure of a lifetime, DG discovers her true identity, battles evil winged-monkey-bats, and attempts to fulfill her destiny. Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road that leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man. Along the way, she is joined by a decidedly strange trio of companions “Glitch,” an odd man missing half his brain; “Raw,” a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage, and “Cain,” a heroic former policeman (known in the O.Z. as tin men, for their tin badges) seeking vengeance for his scarred heart. Ultimately, DG’s destiny leads her to an emotional and terrifying showdown with the scintillatingly wicked sorceress Azkadellia, whose ties to DG are closer than anyone could have imagined. DG’s life, as well as the very future of the O.Z., hangs in the balance.

Alan Cumming recently made a successful return to the West End in Bent, for which he garnered a Best Actor nomination from the What’s On Stage People’s Choice Awards. He also received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature for the film Sweet Land, in which he starred and for which he also served as a producer. The movie has earned audience awards at nearly every film festival in which it has played. He will next be seen in the feature films Gray Matters with Heather Graham, Molly Shannon and Debbie Harry, and Suffering Man’s Charity, which he directed, produced and stars in with Carrie Fisher, Anne Heche, David Boreanaz and Henry Thomas. He will also be featured in the Broadway documentary Show Business. His previous feature film credits include Eyes Wide Shut, Circle of Friends and Goldeneye.

Tin Man will be executive produced by Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr. Co-writers Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle (Medical Investigation, The Pretender) will also serve as executive producers on the project.
