REPORT: WILD CHILD
FILE #: 407
This episode begins with Broots showing Miss Parker and Sydney pictures that were taken of them over the last three weeks without their knowledge. In the picture Sydney and Broots’ faces are rubbed out. Jarod then calls Miss Parker and tells her that someone has eyes for her. Jarod then tells her that he sent the pictures to her because he is worried about her and her father. Miss Parker is now concerned because she received an e-mail earlier from her father that told her not to trust anyone, and that someone has put a Centre hit on him. Miss Parker realizes that she is being followed because someone thinks that she will lead them to her father…
In the mountains near Buck Ridge, Utah, a man stops a card game with his buddies so that he can take out the trash. Outside, his dogs starts barking and he sees that something has made a mess out of the trash. He starts to blame raccoons, but he then hears something by the woodpile and so he shines his light at the woodpile to see what is disturbing his dogs.
The next morning, Jarod is learning about fishing from a man in a bait shop. Outside there is a big uproar and everyone heads out to see what the commotion is. They see a police officer manhandling a small girl who is filthy. The police officer forces her into his car. Jarod learns that she was found in a man’s woodpile. In the struggle to the car the little girl drops her rag doll. Jarod picks it up and holds on to it, until the police officer takes it from him. As the little girl looks from the window of the car, Jarod is reminded of when he was taken from his parents by The Centre.
The girl is taken to a private research facility, where orderlies are trying to strap her into a wheelchair. She is fighting them with everything that she has. The little girl gains her freedom (she bits the orderlies) from the people and runs for what appears to be the outside world, but what she doesn’t realize is that it is a picture window. She runs right into it knocking herself out. One of the orderlies notes that it is like she has never seen a window. Jarod leans over her and tells her that everything will be alright.
Jarod is watching another doctor giving the child shots (vaccinations), and orderlies who are trying to clean her up. As an orderly walks out of the room, Jarod tells him that he is making a mistake by dealing with her the way that they are because she is afraid to be touched. A doctor comes up behind Jarod and tells him that they will instruct their own staff the way they want to. Jarod tells them that his name is Dr. Jarod Bell. They say that they are Dr. Bennett and Dr. Wolverton. Jarod says that because of the child’s lack of verbal skills and her physical appearance she must have been isolated at a very young age. Bennett wonders what made the child suddenly want to make contact. The female doctor tells her that everything will be alright. Jarod tells Bennett that they need to establish trust with her so that they might try to help her with her verbal skills. But he tells Jarod that they can’t because they lose her to social services in 72 hours. Jarod is curious as to if anyone has been able to find any family. They say that they haven’t and they need to use the time wisely. Bennett taps on the window telling the orderlies inside to bring her out.
Miss Parker is going to her work area (where she works with Sydney and Broots), when she sees Lyle and Mr. Cox talking. She stares at them and is suspicious. Mr. Cox looks up and sees her staring at him and smiles to her. Broots and Sydney walk up to her. Sydney says that they have been looking for her. She hopes that it is good news, but Broots tells her that it is not. Broots tells her that the numbers on the photographs are level one encryption codes that are only used by the triumvirate. Miss Parker notes Mutumbo may have something to do with it all. Broots says that he was able to isolate the killer’s designation when he uploaded them into The Centre satellite to send them to Africa. The designation is “The Owl” and Broots says that that is Mr. Cox’s designation. Sydney calls Mr. Cox the grim reaper. Miss Parker says, “You can’t say that Jarod did warn us.” Miss Parker tells Broots that she wants to know everything about Cox and Broots says that he is a clean slate that there is nothing about him in the databases, and that the only proof that he exists is that they can see him. Miss Parker tells him to sweep his office, but Broots tells her that he doesn’t have one. Broots tells Miss Parker and Sydney that a friend of his heard something…. but Broots gets into what friend and Miss Parker stamps her foot to get what she wants. Broots tells them that Mr. Cox has been ordering surgical devices and having them delivered to the Centre. Miss Parker tells him to track the deliveries. Broots runs off to get on it. Sydney says, “What if Cox is the grim reaper?” She says that it’s even more reason that he does not find her father.
The child is sitting in a new room hitting something near the table to make a load pounding noise. Jarod is watching her and a female doctor through the two way mirror. The female doctor comes out of the room and Jarod tells her that he hates to see the girl locked up in here. She says that her name is Dr. Sulvane, Anne. Jarod introduces himself and tells her that the girl need familiar surroundings plants, flowers… but doctor Bennett and Wolverton cut him off saying that it is not possible, that her surroundings have to stay as sterile as possible. They say that they don’t know what her immune system can handle. Anne says that her vitals are off the chart. Her BP is 200 over 120 and her pulse is 150. Anne wants to give her a sedative. They say that they will not give her meds and that there is to be little interaction. They say that they are there to observe. Jarod wonders how they are going to figure out who she is if they don’t try to communicate with her. Wolverton says that she won’t learn to communicate for a long time. Bennett says that he agrees with Wolverton that it is a onetime opportunity to study her. Jarod reminds them that she is a human being. Bennett says that they have to go meet with the press. Anne and Jarod are shocked by the lack of caring for the girl.
Anne is upset at the sight of the little girl sitting in the room. Jarod asks if she is alright and she tells him that she looks so lost. Jarod says that it only takes one person to make a difference. But she tells him that she is has a rule not to invest emotionally. Jarod says that he doesn’t think that she really believes that. Anne walks away and Jarod watches the girl and then wonders where she came from.
Jarod watches as Bennett has his press conference and discusses the child’s condition, reporting her asking whether she was abuse, whether she understands English, etc. Bennett tells them that she is in good care and that they have an expert team with her. Wolverton says that they will answer no more questions and they will keep them updated. One of the reports sees Jarod leave the conference area through a door and she follows.
Jarod is watching the child again. Suddenly a woman enters the room and introduces herself as Leslie Twain with the Salt Lake Chronicle. She asks if he is with Bennett’s team and he says no. Then he introduces himself. She wants to know if she could get some pictures and an interview so that maybe she could help find out who she is. Jarod seems to be humoring her and just stares at her. Bennett enters saying that Dr. Bell is not at Liberty to give interviews. He also shuts the shades. Then they here a crash and see on the monitors that she has escaped. They usher the reporter out and then go after the girl.
The orderly says that he has searched everywhere and that he can’t find her. Another orderly hands Wolverton a tranquilizer rifle and Jarod is disturbed that they are thinking of using on the girl. He protests but they disregard him. Jarod states that the gun was not made for humans. The doctor says that the subject… Jarod tells him that the subject is a little girl that is scared out of her mind. They leave to find her. Anne asks what they do know and Jarod says that they find her first.
Anne and Jarod look all over the grounds of the hospital. They come to the gardens where they are growing planet and flowers. Jarod sees a cross on the ground made out of flower petals and then he looks up. In the tree is the little girl. Jarod takes off his jacket, puts her doll in his belt, and climbs the tree. When she sees him coming she is startled and Jarod promises not to hurt her. Then he hands her the doll. She takes it and Jarod slips, but he catches himself. She laughs at it and he asks her if she thought that was funny. He tells her that it was. They both laugh together.
The girl is walking through plants and flowers. Apparently Jarod and Anne moved a bunch of the garden area into her room to make her feel more at home. Anne says that her vitals have stabilized and then she asks Jarod what he said to her in the tree. He tells her nothing… that they just laughed. Bennett and Wolverton come up behind them and are disturbed to see all the plants in the room. They tell Jarod that it has contaminated her surrounding and that there is too much interaction with the subject. Jarod wants to give her a name but the other Doctors do not, except for Anne. Jarod sees her making a cross out of violet petals and decides to call her violet. Anne agrees. Violet is sitting in her room and starts saying “Mama” & “Dada”. They are all shocked that she spoke, except for Bennett and Wolverton who say that she is just mimicking. Then Violet starts saying “Da Ma”. Violet goes into convulsions and Jarod and Anne run in to help her. Anne sends Bennett after her medical bag.
Jarod goes into Violet’s hospital room and finds Anne sitting on the floor by the bed sleeping. Violet is on the floor next to her asleep. Jarod walks over to Anne and wakes her up telling her to go home and get some sleep. Jarod also tells her that Violet’s test came back and it was a regular strand of the flu virus that went right through her defenses. Anne notes that she responded to the medicine. Anne also says that she is scared to see her so helpless. Jarod thinks that she is investing emotionally. Anne says that she doesn’t understand how Violet got the flu if her room was sterile and the flowers were indigenous and none of the people around her exhibited signs of the flu. Violet stirs and Anne says that she wants her doll and she hands it to her. It hits Jarod that there is something wrong with the doll. He grabs it and runs off with it.
Anne is looking through a microscope at what Jarod found on the doll. She says that it is a cocktail of cold and flu’s. She says that there must be ten viruses there and Jarod says that there are twelve. Anne is shocked that anyone would purposely infect Violets doll. Jarod says that there is no way that the doll could be infected with that many viruses by accident. Anne wonders who would do that and why. Jarod says that someone is afraid that Violet is going to start communicating. Jarod says that he wants to get Violet out of the hospital. Anne says that she will not help. Jarod wants to know what she is so afraid of. She tells him that she had a son, and that he got very sick and she couldn’t save him. Anne tells Jarod that she cannot go through that again. Then she leaves.
Jarod is walking down the hall of the hospital with Violet in tow. He is trying to break her out. He crosses another hallway and then we here Dr. Bennett calling to him. Jarod hides Violet in a nearby room. Dr. Bennett says that he has heard that Jarod has located the source of the girl’s illness. Jarod tells him that he was going to show it to him in the morning. Jarod says that the infection came from her doll. Bennett is shocked. Jarod and Bennett hear a noise coming from the room where Violet is hiding. Anne comes around the corner to tell Bennett that Violet is not in her room. Bennett and Anne leave. Anne is obviously helping Jarod.
Jarod enters the room where Violet is hiding and doesn’t see her anywhere. Then he hears her laugh. He turns around and sees that she is hiding above the door on a small ledge.
Apparently she is playing hide and go seek with him. Jarod smiles at this.
Jarod is walking down the front steps of the research facility. Jarod tries to put Violet in his Jeep, but she starts to get upset. He reassures her that there is nothing to be afraid of and she gets in his car. As they are pulling away Anne steps in front of the Jeep. She tells Jarod that she wants to help him and Violet.
Miss Parker and Broots are following Mr. Cox. His truck stops again and they wonder what he is looking for. Broots says that he was unable to find out where Cox is having the tools delivered. They look on as Cox takes a picture of the animal and then removes a shovel from his truck and scoops up a dead animal. Cox throws it is the back of his truck.
We then see Violet standing in the Jeep letting the wind rush over her. Then we see Anne and Jarod talking and Violet sitting in front of the car making a cross out of flower petals. Anne wants to know what makes Jarod think that this area is where Violet came from. Jarod says that it is the only place that has a natural source of heat… a hot spring.
Violet sees a plane go by overhead and then she says, “Da Ma” and she goes exploring. Jarod and Anne chase after her. She leads them to her little home where see has spent most of her life. They go into her cave and see that there are wind chimes made of broken glass. They wonder where she got the glass. Jarod fins a picture of a little girl with a woman and a man… apparently Violet with her mother and father.
She goes on a search again. She eventually leads them to a downed plane. When they get there they see bones of adult humans with jewelry and pieces of cloth… Apparently these are her parents. Violet points to one calling it Ma and the other calling it Da. She is somewhat upset put takes comfort by resting her head on Jarod’s knee.
Jarod discovers a cable that is running into the forest surrounding the area. Jarod follows it and discovers a hidden shelter of bushes where someone who has obviously been watching her. In the bushes there are supplies and articles about a family of three that were missing after a flight. Jarod realizes that whoever left Violet out there knew who she was and knew she was out there for many years.
Back at Anne’s apartment, Jarod is looking at the many pictures of Violet. There are pictures that go back at least ten years. Anne says that Violet is resting. Anne is disturbed by the fact that someone would leave her out there in the woods. Anne notices that this is personal to Jarod and he tells her that it is, but refuses to tell her why. Jarod leaves saying that he is going to find the identity of the person that did this to Violet.
Broots walks into Miss Parker’s office wearing a suit and tie. She asks him if someone died and he shows her pictures of Mr. Cox with an older man. He tells her that Cox came and went from the back door with hefty bags. Broots says that he doesn’t know what is in the bags. Miss Parker asks what comes out the back door of a mortuary and Broots thinks they are body parts. Broots says that the bags were sent to east wing of SL-6. Miss Parker says that that area used to be the infirmary, and that she had her tonsils removed there. Broots doesn’t think that Cox is handing out lollipops to little girls and Miss Parker says, “Not live ones anyway.” Miss Parker thinks that they should pay the grim reaper a visit.
Jarod breaks into Dr. Wolverton’s office. He starts shuffling through things and soon discovers a case on the shelf behind everything. Inside of the case are tapes and photos of Violet.
On SL-6 Miss Parker and Broots are trying to break into Cox’s office. Broots starts to pick the lock, but drops the tool that he is using. When he goes to pick it up the door opens in front of him. He sits staring at men’s shoes. He looks up to see Cox. Cox asks if he has lost something. Miss Parker and Broots follow him into the room. Miss Parker says that she loves what he has done with the place. He comments about her getting her tonsils removed there. She is a bit shocked that he would know that, but he says that he had to clean out files. Miss Parker comments about him hanging out at the mortuary. He is shocked that she was following him. She tells him that if he can do it so can she. Miss Parker asks him who the gray hair is and he tells her that it is his father. Cox shows them his hobby… taxidermy. He has stuffed raccoons and other animals. Cox comments on changing their eyes and how his father told him that it is like stealing your soul. Miss Parker says, “Aren’t daddies so much fun.” Cox then asks how her father is. She says, “Wouldn’t you just love to know.” Miss Parker is starting to leave and then Cox tells her that he did not take the pictures of her.
Jarod is watching the videos that he found in Wolverton’s office. He shows Anne the tapes. They are of Violet in 1990. Then there are shots in 1993 and then 1996. Jarod says that this one (1996) shows how she hurt her ankle. Violet is on the screen trapped in an animal trap. Violet is struggling but is not able to get her foot out of it. Then we see that the camera is moving closer and the person who is shooting the camera puts it down and releases her from the trap. Then he picks the camera up and we see that it is Dr. Wolverton.
Miss Parker wants Broots to tell her that Lyle bought a very expensive camera recently. He tells her that it is the kind of camera that took the pictures of her. Broots shows Miss Parker a memo that says that not only did Lyle bring Cox to The Centre but he also created his position. Miss Parker think that Lyle is behind the hit on Mr. Parker’s Life.
Lyle is in Miss Parker’s office telling her that she has lost her mind. Miss Parker confronts Lyle about the photos and tell him that Cox is a Centre assassin. Lyle says that he is trying to help. That he also got an e-mail from Mr. Parker telling him to take the pictures of Miss Parker and send them to the triumvirate to start establishing her alibi. Miss Parker wonders what the alibi is for and he says that he doesn’t know. He says that he was told to make a paper trail for himself as well. Lyle tells her that Mutumbo is coming to town.
Jarod is making a cocktail of sedatives that he is putting in tranquilizer darts. Then we see Anne showing Dr. Wolverton Violet’s doll. He takes the doll. Then we see Violet walking in the garden smelling the flowers and then she sees Dr. Wolverton and is startled by him. He has her doll and is offering it to her. He is telling her that it is for the good of all. She almost has the doll when a tranquilizer dart hits Wolverton’s leg and scares Violet away. Jarod comes out with the tranquilizer gun. Jarod stands over Wolverton gloating.
Dr. Wolverton wakes in a ravine naked and dirty. Jarod is on the ledge above him. Wolverton begs for cloths and shoes, but Jarod says that it would contaminate the area. He says that Violet has nothing when he found her. Jarod is telling him that Wolverton let her starve in the wilderness for his studies. Jarod says that it will get cold. And then offers to let him confess. But he doesn’t so Jarod leaves. Wolverton confesses and Jarod returns. Jarod tosses Violet’s doll down to Wolverton. Wolverton grabs it and curls up on the floor.
Anne is thanking Jarod for helping to put Wolverton behind bars. Anne is looking at a newspaper that read: “Doctor arrested for abuse of a missing girl.” Jarod says that it took courage to become Violet’s legal guardian. Anne says that he son came to her in a dream and told her it would be okay if she took care of Violet. Violet taps on Jarod’s shoulder. He turns around to say good-bye and she gives him a flower. He tells her that he has something for her… he takes a new doll out of his bag. Violet takes Jarod’s hand and puts it on his heart and then she says “Jarod”. Jarod is touched that she has learned to say his name. They hug and then Jarod tells her to have a beautiful life. Jarod walks to his Jeep as Anne and Violet look at the doll. Jarod drives away.
The screen fades to black……..
