REPORT: ANGEL’S FLIGHT
FILE #: 403
The episode begins in San Francisco, California with Jarod approaching and ice cream vendor who is cleaning his truck early in the morning. Jarod asks when he is going to open because Jarod would like a “Tasty Surprise” double-dip vanilla, with granola sprinkles. But it is only 7:30 in the morning and the man is not yet opened and is hesitant about selling to Jarod. He tries to tell Jarod to go across the street to get a real breakfast, but Jarod tells him that there are more essential vitamins in the cone then there are in the breakfast. The man asks Jarod if he is a nut and Jarod says that he is not he just really likes ice cream…… Jarod walks away with his ice cream and a smile. Has he walks down the street he notices a man putting up posters regarding his missing daughter. Intrigues, Jarod goes to look at one of the posters, then takes it with his as he hails a cab…. but tosses the ice cream.
In the next scene, Jarod is talking to the father of the missing girl. He tells the man that his name is Jarod Waxman and that he is a detective with the police department. The father tells Jarod that the police already looked through his daughters room and because she has been gone less than 48hrs. that it is not a high priority case… but the father is convinced that his daughter didn’t run away or pull some sort of stunt. Jarod looks through Jessie’s room, he realizes that Jessie likes to collect angels. The father says that she has been collecting them ever since her mother died, three years ago. As Jarod looks through Jessie’s favorite book, The Power of Angels, he finds a card with a demonic image on it… on the back, in Jessie’s handwriting, is the phrase, “Gates of Hell.”
In the workroom of a wax museum, Jarod is working on a was head, but the face has no features. The owner of the museum, Mr. Kleinman, tells Jarod that the faceless man reminds him of Jarod. He asks if the wax head is a gift for a friend and Jarod tells him is more like a message, as he packs the box. Mr. Kleinman tells Jarod that he has a brought him a snack… Alcatraz Oysters…. which can only be found in a specific place in the San Francisco Bay. Jarod is not sure whether he should eat the oysters, but he takes one, nevertheless. Jarod discovers that he likes that oysters and that they have a very pungent odor and drips a little juice on the note that he is including with the faceless head. The note reads, “Beware of strangers bearing gifts.” Jarod says, “This might just do the trick.”
He shows Mr. Kleinman the card with the demonic figure on it and asks him if he has ever seen it before. Mr. Kleinman gasps when he sees the card and tell Jarod that he has seen it before. He shows Jarod the tattoo on his arm that reveals that he was a prisoner in a German concentration camp. He tells Jarod that members of the “SS” wore insignias like the one on the card.
We see quick images of Jarod changing his cloths and then we see Jarod walk up to a club called “Gates of Hell” where he flashes the card and is allowed into the club. Once inside, he encounters a girl who has pierced most of her face and who appears to have taken a liking to Jarod. She tells Jarod that Hawk only gives those cards to a select few and that he is holding the reading in the back room.
Jarod enters that back room and watches as a young man is speaking to a small group of teens, apparently looking into their minds and finding their deepest secrets. A female teenager is asked the significance of a specific year and she says that it is the year that her mother died. Written on her after Hawk removes his hand the name Claire is written on her skin and she reveals that it was her twin sisters name… One teen asks Hawk to tell them about the Angels Flight. As Hawk’s assistant, Kessel. looks uneasy, Jarod speaks up saying the it was a dream that the great Houdini had repeatedly throughout his life… Houdini felt that given the power of angels he could break free from the boundaries of earth and soar in the heavens like a god… but when he died, his dream also died. Hawk is surprises and suspicious of Jarod. He manages to recover and suggests that they all reassemble again at midnight for a “reading session”.
The room empties, but Jarod stays behind. He tells Hawk that the group seems to be very loyal. Hawk says that he offers them something that the world has denied them…. love. Jarod tells Hawk that he wishes to “learn from the best” and then proceeds to pick up a saltshaker from the table… Jarod pours it out onto the table and then blows it away…. left behind written in salt is the word…. LOVE. Hawk is duly impressed and tells Kessel to give Jarod the location of the midnight meeting. After they have both let the room, Jarod pull out his red notebook and opens it to the page with a picture of Jessie…. he then says “Where are you fallen angel? Where are you?”
At the Centre, Broots runs into Miss Parker with a box in his hands and tells Miss Parker that she is not going to be happy with the latest news. Sydney asks him if he has found Jarod and Broots tells him that he hasn’t… that is as if Jarod had fallen into a black hole. Miss Parker leans close to Broots and says, “Like your social life?” and Broots agrees with her. They all notice that Mr. Lyle is speaking to an Asian woman who is giving him cigars and champagne from someone… but no one seems to know who sent the gifts or why. Broots tells Miss Parker that he heard from Jerry in transportation that Mr. Lyle is expecting some “hot shot” from the west coast Centre offices. But that no one knows who. Broots is wearing a Hawaiian shirt and Miss Parker asks if Don Hoe threw up on him then she starts to leave… Sydney reminds Broots of the package in his hands and Broots says that it is for Miss Parker…. They put the box down and open it… inside is a wax head that appears to be faceless with a not that reads, “Beware of strangers bearing gifts.”
Back at the wax museum, we see Jarod painting part of a face and then inserting them into boxes…. reading a book on how to perform magic… then practicing what he is reading. Jarod arrives at the address that Kessel gave him…. he tries to open the door with the gargoyle on it but finds it locked. He hears Hawk’s voice from another part of the building… Jarod goes to peek… Jarod sees Hawk standing in a pentagram with the teenagers from earlier evenly placed around it. Hawk reveals that a girl’s mother who died in 1994 used to call her puppy and that one of the boys there was beaten as a child by his father. In between the two, Kessel discovers Jarod standing there. Jarod remarks on the security of the locked door and Kessel says that Hawk likes to keep his personal life, personal. Kessel tells Jarod that he should go downstairs since the session has begun, but Jarod want to know something first… the flashes the card with the demonic image on it at Kessel. When Kessel asks Jarod where he got the card, Jarod says that he like to keep his personal life, personal. Kessel looks rattles but tells Jarod that he’d better go before he misses the session. Soon after Jarod gets downstairs, Hawk ends the session and tells everyone that Mr. Kessel will collect their “offerings”.
At The Centre, Miss Parker has received three more packages from Jarod… a set of eyes with a not that reads, “See no evil”, a pair of ears with a note that reads, “Hear no evil” and a mouth that with a note that reads, “Speak no evil” that obviously go with the faceless head. Miss Parker asks if they have found anything else on the secret man that is coming to The Centre. Then Miss Parker assembles the face.
Jarod is busy breaking into Hawk’s locked lair. Inside he finds a computer and accessed files on all the teenagers that are in Hawk’s group, however, there is also and file for Jessie. Each file has detailed information on the teenager and has a list of their secrets. It is obvious to Jarod that Hawk’s little shows are nothing more of a con. In a box in Hawk’s desk drawer, Jarod find jewelry that must have been part of the “offerings”…. Jarod finds among them Jessie’s angel pendant. In the computer file on Jessie, Jarod reads that Jessie’s mother didn’t die of cancer but that she committed suicide. Jarod grabs the information that he needs and leaves…
However, as Jarod leaves through an alley door, Hawk and Kessel see him and Hawk tells Kessel to kill the “Son of a B***h.”
Jarod has a “heart to heart” with Jessie’s father and tells him that he knows that Jessie’s mother didn’t die from cancer and that he must know the truth. Jessie’s father tells Jarod that his wife was told that she had cancer and was losing the battle… so one night she climbed to the roof and jumped. She was holding her angel pendant in her hand when the police found her dead in the alley the next morning, and Jessie then started to become preoccupied with angels.
At the Centre, Miss Parker has the face assembled with all the parts that Jarod has sent. Miss Parker, Sydney, and Broots all look at it and determine that none of them have ever met this person. Broots remarks that the face looks like “Gilligan” and when Miss Parker doesn’t understand to whom he is referring, he attempts to explain it to her. Miss Parker is not amused and asks Broots if her grew up in a trail park. Broots is shocked by the comment and says that it was a mobile home. Looking at Jarod’s notes, Miss Parker notices that there is a small stain in the corner of everyone. She smells it and says that it smells like low tide. Broots smells it and says that they are all the same. Miss Parker tells him to have it analyzed.
Jarod is trying to figure out what happened to Jessie… and looks at his red notebook and then at a book he found at Hawk’s entitled “A History of Fallen Angels”. He begins to think… about the books title and Jessie’s moms’ suicide and then what one of the teens said about the angel’s flight being attainable…. then we see Jarod on the roof top of the warehouse were the midnight sessions are held and as he looks over the edge, he realizes what has become of Jessie. He goes to the roof top below, by way of the stairs on the side of the building, and soon enters a door… where he finds a trail of blood that leads him to a battered and beaten Jessie. Just as he is about to take her out of that place, Kessel comes behind Jarod and tell him not to move. Jarod does as he is told but is becoming impatient… he asks Kessel if Jessie discovered the truth about the computer files or did she not have enough to offer? Kessel tells Jarod that Jessie found out about the con and that he didn’t know that Hawk would kill Jessie. Jarod tells him that Hawk didn’t kill her…. she is still alive! Kessel caves in and lets Jarod take her to the hospital to get the care that she needs to live.
With Kessel’s help Jarod starts his plan to catch a con man. He puts his shirt on a dummy and then shoots it several times, so that Kessel can take it to Hawk and tell him that he killed Jarod. They remove the safety wire that Hawk kept hidden on the steps leading up to the ledge of the roof and Jarod tosses a dummy over the edge to see where it will land.
At the Centre, the face is fully finished now… down to the hair and eyebrows… but no one seems to know who the man is. Broots says that the lab discovered that the stain was liquid that came from a very specific oyster, found only in San Francisco Bay! Broots says that he also had them analysis the wax that Jarod sent them, and it came from a wax museum. He tracked Jarod down to a Wax Museum in San Francisco and when he called, he got a recording from Jarod that said when they come after him to bring the head along too. Miss Parker tells Broots to get the jets fired up and to change his shirt because it is making her nauseous.
When Miss Parker, Sydney, Broots and Sam arrive at the museum Mr. Kleinman tells them that Jarod is gone but that before he left, he designed a new exhibit called “Centre of Shame.” When they go into the room where it is set up the find a headless man and their likenesses in what appears to be stocks. Miss Parker puts the wax head on the headless body and turns it into position it sets off a chain reaction and Sydney, Miss Parker, and Broots’ likeness head are chopped of execution style. They all leave and Broots takes the head with him.
On top of the warehouse, Hawk is welcoming his group to “the angel’s flight”… suddenly, Jarod appears, and Hawk is shocked… because he saw the shirt that Kessel brought back, and he was sure that Jarod was dead. Jarod tells Hawk’s followers that he is a fraud and that he knew stuff about them by researching their pasts… he gives them each their own file. Hawk is ready to jump and checks for his safety wire and Jarod asks if he is looking for that safety wire that he removed. Jarod asks Hawk if he killed Jessie because she found out about the little con… to avoid jail Hawk jumps from the building…. birds fly into the air which would have been part of the illusion… and Hawk falls to the ground below, so we think…. Kessel is dumb founded and says that Jarod killed Hawk. Jarod laughs and has everyone look over the side… Jarod pushes something and the roof below lights up… there they can see a safety airbag and Hawk on it… Jarod tells them not always to believe what they see.
Back at The Centre, Miss Parker, Sydney, and Broots are staring at the head in the box… they are still trying to figure out who it is supposed to be… they close the box and at that moment Lyle walks in to tell them that The Triumvirate is trying a more hands on approach and they are sending someone to act as a in house “internal affairs” person. He then introduces them to Mr. Cox who simply nods to them and then leaves with Lyle. After they have gone, Miss Parker opens the box again and they look at the wax head… it is him… Mr. Cox is the wax head. Sydney says out loud that he wonders who this Mr. Cox really is, and Miss Parker tells him that Jarod has already told them who Mr. Cox is…. he is the…. Grim Reaper!
Jarod goes to the hospital and greets Jessie and her father as they come out of the hospital. Jessie says that the father told her that he is the one who saved her and so she thanks him. She tells Jarod that she wants him to have her angel pendant because it kept her safe and maybe it will do the same for him. Jarod accepts the gift and tells Jessie that he will keep it close. Jessie and her father walk away, and Jarod looks at the pendant…. the screen fades to black….
